About Us

Benchmark Public Relations is one of the premier public relations firms on the prairies. We are a full-service public relations agency offering all aspects of communications services. We began as a single person operation more than twenty years ago and have since grown to encompass more than a dozen staff and consultants situated in offices in Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg.
We’ve created communications strategies for a wide range of organizations including KidSport™ Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Health, the Saskatchewan Safety Council and St. John Ambulance. We work closely with our clients to identify their audiences, the messages that will resonate with them, and the best methods to reach them. We ensure regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure our plans are working as anticipated and have contingency plans in place in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Our research capacity includes all aspects of qualitative research. We’ve conducted focus groups for the Saskatchewan Music Alliance to determine the best methods to promote music in the province. We’ve provided key informant interviews for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency to determine the most effective means of providing information to men suffering from prostate cancer. And, we’ve held facilitated workshops for organizations such as the Saskatchewan Safety Council to review their branding and community image.

Our publishing division has grown significantly in recent years. We are now the contract publishers for the Rural Councillor, the quarterly magazine for the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM), and Global Ventures, the quarterly magazine for the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP). We have a dedicated team of writers, editors, photographers, designers and salespeople who ensure our clients’ needs are met each issue. These publications are in addition to our own annual periodicals, the Saskatchewan Media Directory and the Manitoba Media Directory, which are the most comprehensive directories of media contacts in either province. In Saskatchewan alone there are over 220 media outlets in our database – providing us with the strategic advantage of being able to target niche populations and regions, as well as to ensure widespread outreach across the province through both traditional and non-traditional media.

Media relations are not something that should be left in the hands of amateurs or organizations that do it as a sideline to their core business. The Benchmark team has established relationships with local, provincial and national media. When we initiate contact with the media with story ideas, they listen because we do not waste their time with frivolous pitches or thinly-veiled attempts to get free advertising.

When Cirque du Soliel was having trouble marketing one of its shows in Saskatchewan, the company turned to us to increase its profile. We arranged for numerous interviews and had on-site media consultants to ensure every media outlet had the opportunity to provide positive stories for our client. We recently conducted media relations for the Skills Canada National Competition in Saskatchewan, and have provided media relations support for the Business Development Bank of Canada to promote its annual Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

Numerous organizations have benefited from our media relations training program. We have trained city councillors, senior government officials, national sport team members, university deans and not-for-profit spokespeople on the most effective ways of communicating through the media. We were also chosen to develop and deliver the public relations module for the Municipal Leadership Development Program, which is provided by the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities and the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association. Our two senior consultants also instruct at the University of Regina’s Public Relations Certificate Program.

Our design capabilities are equally as strong. We are particularly proud of our efforts to work with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and KidSport™ Saskatchewan to design and market their annual best-selling calendar. We have designed annual reports for numerous government ministries as well as Wascana Centre Authority, Saskatoon Community Clinic and the Saskatchewan Arts Board. We have also created posters, flyers, newsletters and banners for various organizations. More recently, we created the new brand for Creative Saskatchewan.

We provide online marketing and social media services for several groups. We’ve created electronic newsletters for the Saskatchewan Hotels and Hospitality Association, Saskatchewan Health and STEP. We are also responsible for the social media initiatives of the Saskatchewan Trails Association and Saskatchewan Music Conference, and we have created and maintained websites for the Saskatchewan Music Festivals Association, Indian Head Agricultural Research Foundation, Saskatchewan Music Alliance, and the Lifesaving Society.

We have organized numerous events from international trade missions to national conferences. We organized the Broaden Your Borders educational trade mission into the United States on behalf of Trade Team Saskatchewan – a network of provincial and federal agencies involved in international trade. We organized a Medicare Conference for the University of Regina involving presenters such as Monique Bégin, Stephen Lewis and Allan Blakeney. We have also organized other major events such as the Saskatchewan Music Conference and the Trans Canada Trail Summit as well as media conferences, luncheons and annual general meetings.

Media buying is another important element to strategic communications initiatives. Since our media buyers have regular contact and established relationships with Saskatchewan advertising venues, we are able to negotiate better agreements than less experienced firms.

Although there are a number of freelance writers that focus on written communications and agencies that encourage clients to spend much of their communication budget on expensive multi-media advertising campaigns, there is a shortage of companies in Saskatchewan that specialize in all aspects of public relations, media relations and strategic communications. Benchmark Public Relations is proud to fill this gap in the industry.
