The Summer 2017 edition of Global Ventures has been published. Benchmark Public Relations designed and laid out the issue, supplied editorial content and secured advertising.
Global Ventures is a quarterly business publication produced by the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP). The publication is aimed at increasing the public profile of STEP members while carrying a message to the provincial business community as well as a vast network of international contacts.
Here are some editorial highlights from the issue, which focused on manufacturing:
Bridgeview Manufacturing: What were you doing when you were 13 years old? When you weren’t at school, you were likely hanging out with friends or involved in a recreation activity. Kevin Hruska was busy founding his company Bridgeview Manufacturing Inc. and establishing a farm in Gerald. Today, his farm and business are thriving. It’s a remarkable story about what you can achieve through hard work and dedication.
Breina Docks: In the beginning, Edward Fagnou and his cousin simply wanted to get a dock built so they could maximize their experience at the lake. When the price wasn’t right, they decided to do it themselves. After building 100 feet in 2008, the neighbours began to take notice and a company was born. Based out of rural Saskatchewan in St. Brieux, these aren’t your typical mainline manufacturers.
Robinson Residential: There have been lots of events put on to celebrate #Canada150, but Robinson Residential’s initiative might top them all. The company is designing a customized smaller home for each province and territory that reflects its identity. It started with a light house in Nova Scotia. When you learn more about this company, you realize it’s different by design.

Saskatchewan has a vibrant manufacturing sector and we were happy to help highlight it in this issue. We’re proud to continue working with STEP to shed a spotlight on Saskatchewan’s exporting community.
We have been working on some exciting projects this summer as we continue to serve as the contract manager of the Saskatchewan Trails Association (STA).
The summer began with Saskatchewan Trails Day on June 3, an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the beautiful trails in our province. Through social media posts, we showcased people enjoying trails and we also highlighted how trails promote: healthy living, economic development, tourism and environmental preservation.
Leading up to Sask Trails Day, we shared tips with the public on how to make the most of the event and we sent out a media release province-wide. We were able to book an interview with CBC Saskatchewan for Dorthy Rhead, one of our founding members. Rheads talked about the trails she has hiked over the years and discussed the benefits she receives from hiking.
Here’s one of her quotes from the article:
“It disconnects you from the rat race is what it does. It sort of rejuvenates you, it makes you feel alive. It puts everything aside that’s been bothering you, or things that really don’t have that much bearing on life in general — puts it all aside and you go out there and you breathe the fresh air and you look at all the beauty around you. It’s just very, very relaxing.”

As part of the Sask Trails Day and with June being Recreation and Parks Month in Saskatchewan, we also launched an STA photo contest, encouraging people to take photos of their favorite trails and submit them using the hashtag #SaskTrailsDay. The best photo, as selected by the STA board of directors, will receive a prize package valued at $200. The contest has received some great entries so far:
This summer, we have also launched our Saskatchewan Rails to Trails manual. This 200-page manual will assist organizations that are interested in converting abandoned rail lines into usable trails. It is free for all STA members and costs $20 for the general public: http://sasktrails.ca/trail-builders/#rails.
This document supports the vision of the STA to “provide support to local trail clubs including resource materials, education programs regarding trail development, facilitate communication among trail clubs and fundraising.”
In creating this manual, we reviewed Saskatchewan rails-to-trails projects in all stages of development and interviewed people involved in those projects. We then developed step-by-step guidelines and compiled links to resources.
We have had the pleasure of welcoming Shayla to the STA team as a summer student. Shayla has been extremely active on social media promoting trails and also helped us launch an Instagram account. She has also been working on our next major project: the STA Trail Directory, which will include quality maps, GPS coordinates and detailed descriptions of many of Saskatchewan’s trails and their nearby amenities.
Through the STA, we are proud to continue highlighting Saskatchewan’s beauty and encouraging people to be physically active.
We’re proud to help organize the Saskatchewan All Terrain Vehicle Association’s (SATVA) safety campaign this summer.
SATVA has received funding from the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council to reduce the number of injuries in Saskatchewan from ATVs by raising safety issues within the community’s target audiences. SATVA is asking ATVers to Ride Safe. Ride Smart and follow important safety practices like wearing a helmet and avoiding dangerous driving.
We created a poster (see below) that has been distributed to motor sports shops and provincial associations like the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association.
To kick off ATV Safety Week, we helped SATVA put together a media event outside Regina. The media had the chance to try an ATV and learn more about operating the vehicle safely. There was some great press coverage generated:

During ATV Safety Week, and throughout the summer, we will also be creating sponsored social media posts for SATVA and distributing themed safety articles for publication in Saskatchewan.
We’re happy to be working on a campaign that promotes ATV safety and will result in fewer accidents on the roadways.

For the past number of months, together with my team at Benchmark Public Relations, I have had the great privilege of working with volunteers from Saskatchewan’s Muslim community to help organize the World Partnership Walk – Canada’s largest public movement to fight global poverty. This is an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation that supports programs that help million of people in Africa and Asia.
There are many reasons why I was happy to play a role in this event. Probably the biggest reason is that it allowed me the opportunity to work with a community that was new to me. It’s no secret that our province’s demographics are changing. Just take your children or grandchildren to a playground in Harbour Landing where we hear dozens of different languages being spoken and children from numerous cultures and ethnicities are playing together.
I was happy to be involved with this project because I believe meeting new people and learning about other cultures is fun and personally fulfilling. But as an entrepreneur, I also know a business case can be made for increasing cultural understanding and broadening your circles of friends and acquaintances to include New Canadians. Over the years I’ve learned that the best way to grow a business is by working on personal relationships. Getting to know people. Face-to-face. One customer. One referral at a time.
We got great support from the Muslim community for this annual event. Our goal for the future is to create greater linkages with the broader community. Creating connections to communities that don’t know each other very well can be difficult. It requires time, a commitment to open communications and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. If you want to meet people who care passionately about creating a better world for our future generations, consider getting involved in this great event next year, as a sponsor or walk participant.
