New Global Ventures focuses on technology sector, resources and services

Saskatchewan is emerging as a technology hub and the province’s exporting companies are making a tremendous impact. We focused on this sector in the Fall 2018 issue of Global Ventures. We publish the magazine on behalf of Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP).

The publication is an appropriate medium to relay timely messaging to the local business community and the network of international contacts that STEP has developed. Articles featured identify STEP members who are making a strong economic impact to the province while the publication offers provincial business leaders, stakeholders, provincial and international media as well as international contacts with timely information pertaining to Saskatchewan exports.

In this issue, we profiled:

NC Software Consulting: This company is shifting the way in which health care providers find replacements for available shifts. Their technology, the NC Smart Call platform, automatically identifies and communicates available shift details to eligible employees while satisfying complex operational and union requirements.

Canadian Western Agribition: Agribition is a show with a lot of meat on its bones. The show – scheduled for Nov. 19-24 – has a jam-packed slated including a display of beef cattle, features horses, bison, sheep and goats, an extensive agribusiness trade show, Indigenous culture, pro rodeo performances and other exciting entertainment offerings. There’s a new cabaret taking place after the last rodeo.

FailSafe House Lifting Systems: Much like people call a taxi or ride-sharing service when they need a lift, they call FailSafe House Lifting Systems when their house needs a lift. The company’s innovative ATLAS system allows contractors to easily lift a house up to 18 feet if the foundation underneath needs to be replaced or redeveloped.

OBASA Group of Companies: Gordon Doell brought his vision to the hospitality industry when he launched OBASA Hospitality, which offers customers a place to stay, the ability to tailor a stay to any individual or company, expert insurance and relocation services, software serving owners and operators of all accommodations, and a patent-pending loyalty program recognized globally.

New Release from Benchmark Press – The More Things Change: A Case Study to Introduce Information Technology Ethics

The ethical practices surrounding technology is a crucial issue in present-day society. Regina author Donna Lindskog’s new book, The More Things Change: A Case Study to Introduce Information Technology Ethics, explores the issue in-depth through a fictional case study and includes an appendix of questions for discussion. The book is the latest to be released by Saskatchewan publisher Benchmark Press.

The book follows Carol, who’s starting her new job as a programmer at MTS in Winnipeg, Manitoba, along with her two friends Jeremy, and Susan. None of the friends want to use the clunky old keypunch machine that their boss shows them. Soon, however, more urgent problems require Carol’s attention, like preventing some, or all of them from getting involved in a lawsuit.

Why doesn’t Susan feel she needs to give credit where it is due? Can Jeremy find out who hacked into the operator system that supplies emergency phone numbers? What should Carol do about the pressure from management to change private customer data? Ethics has never been on Carol’s radar before, but now she is beginning to see these issues all over the Information Technology department.

“From Facebook to self-driving cars to net neutrality, the application of ethics to the practice of technology is becoming a more critical issue every day. Donna’s book explores this topic in a very personal way that is both suspenseful and nostalgic for those of us who survived the 8-bit ‘80s,” says software engineer Grant Gilchrist.

Lindskog is an Information Systems Professional I.S.P. (ret) with 31 years experience. She specialized in Network Operational Support Systems (OSS) at SaskTel. Her interest in IT ethics crystallized when a member of the public came to her after she was awarded the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in Technology in 2003 and asked “How can I tell which computer people I can trust?” She blogs about it at IT World Canada.

Relaunching a respected agriculture magazine

When the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) needed a new contract publisher for its magazine Saskatchewan Farmers’ Voice, it soon found what it was looking for in Benchmark Public Relations.

“We were looking for a new publisher and Benchmark fit the bill nicely,” said Duane Haave,  APAS General Manager.  “They have previous publishing experience and understood our needs.”

Benchmark is already the contract publisher for Global Ventures, which it publishes on behalf of the Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP) and Rural Councillor, for the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM). It also publishes SARM’s annual convention guides as well as media directories for Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

“This was a great opportunity for us to further our reach into the publishing world,” said Pat Rediger, Managing Partner of Benchmark. “With the addition of Saskatchewan Farmers’ Voice, we have become one of the largest contract publishers in the province.”

A significant change for the magazine involved the distribution. Instead of being distributed as part of the Western Producer, it is now distributed directly to 35,000 farm households in Saskatchewan through Canada Post. It is also distributed to the top decision makers in the province including MPs, MLAs, government ministries and agricultural stakeholders. Past issues are also stored electronically on the APAS website at

“Our aim is to provide information about APAS activities, examine important agricultural issues, feature sections on agronomy and business, and provide information on member benefits available to APAS member ratepayers,” said Haave.

The summer issue of Saskatchewan Farmers’ Voice contains some great content:

  • Cover Story: Farmer Scott Owens talks about what it’s like to farm alongside an oil development. He said there is a misconception that he welcomed the development onto his land and that it has subsequently made him very wealthy. But he says in reality, under the Surface Rights Act, he really didn’t have a say in the issue.
  • Protecting Farm Equipment: Farmers need the proper tools to succeed. It’s not enough to have the right equipment; they have to properly maintain the equipment. This article provides farmers with some handy tips on farm equipment management, including moving farm equipment, using farm equipment at local fairs and keeping in touch with financial advisors regarding insurance coverage.
  • Saskatchewan Farm Dog: In the Winter 2018 issue, Bob the dog was featured on the cover of the magazine. He was so popular that the decision was made to feature a farm dog from Saskatchewan in every issue. Next up is Sully, an eight-year old Boxer Cross. His humans say he’s a good companion for fencing but needs to stop moving out of the way of tractors at the last moment.

APAS is Saskatchewan’s general farm organization based on rural municipal boundaries. It provides farmers and ranchers with a democratically-elected, grassroots, non-partisan, producer-run voice to government and society.

Benchmark Press author receives book award

Regina author Douglas Stewart has been recognized with an award for his book The Regina Indian Industrial School (1891-1910): Historical Overview and Chronological Narrative – published by Benchmark Press. Stewart received the Academic Book Prize from the Presbyterian Church in Canada’s (PCC) Committee on History at this year’s General Assembly of the PCC at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont.

In his book, Stewart draws on a wide expanse of archival material to present a history of a relatively large but little-known residential school that operated just outside Regina at the end of the 19th and into the early 20th Century. The book is separated into two parts. The first locates the Regina Indian Industrial School within the wider context of residential schooling in Canada. The second part depicts the manner in which this institution was operated.

“We are extremely proud of Douglas Stewart for being recognized with this prestigious literary award,” said Pat Rediger, managing partner of Benchmark Press. “Through diligent research, Douglas has helped bring a very important chapter of Saskatchewan’s history to light and this award is a testament to all his hard work.”

Stewart is a Professor of Education (emeritus), University of Regina, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy of education. He is a past-president of the Canadian Philosophy of Education Society and a 2012 recipient of the Society’s Distinguished Service Award.

Promoting ATV safety through multiple avenues

This summer, Benchmark Public Relations is managing the Saskatchewan All Terrain Vehicle Association’s (SATVA) #RideSafeRideSmart campaign. This important initiative reminds ATVers to follow proper safety practices before and during their off-roading sessions.

We created a promotional poster for SATVA and drafted and distributed a media release. We have booked SATVA some one-on-one interviews so it can share its message with the public. As part of the campaign, we have also taken over SATVA’s social media feeds and will be promoting some sponsored content through Facebook.
